‘I Was Still Detoxing’: Samuel L. Jackson Reveals He Was A Week Out Of Rehab When He Played A Crack Addict In ‘Jungle Fever’.
Samuel L. Jackson had real-life experience to draw from when he played the crack-addicted Gator in Spike Lee‘s 1991 classic “Jungle Fever.” That’s because he was hired just a week out of rehab.
In a recent interview on “The Breakfast Club,” the veteran actor talked about being addicted to drugs many years ago and how it truly blocked his success.
“Once I got clean, everything sort of changed,” said Jackson. “So there’s a very distinct correlation of me changing my life and being focused and clear about what I needed to do and my success…. I was a week out of rehab when I started doing ‘Jungle Fever,’ so I didn’t really need makeup. I was still detoxing.”
Jackson even remembered going up to craft services on the “Jungle Fever” set and the Nation of Islam’s Fruit of Islam unit, who were doing security at the time, thought he was a neighborhood crackhead and nearly shooed him away.
And although crack was just one of the substances he used, Jackson said his drug of choice was anything in front of him. He also revealed that his wife LaTanya Richardson helped him get sober.
“The day they found me passed out on the kitchen floor, next day I was in rehab,” he explained. “She called my best friend from high school, who was a drug counselor. He found a bed for me in upstate New York, so I went straight in there. I didn’t go in kicking and screaming. I went in. I was tired.”
“Then the job came up, ‘Jungle Fever,’ and the drug counselors were like ‘you shouldn’t do that job,'” Jackson recalled. “You shouldn’t be playing a crack addict. All of your triggers are going to be there, pipes and lighters.'”
Jackson said he used the role as motivation to stay clean so he wouldn’t have to enter rehab again.
You can hear him talk about the experience below:

Here’s Everything You Need To Know About ‘Black Mirror’ Season 6
As great as it was to watch Miley Cyrus transform into Ashley O. in the newest season of Black Mirror, we're all super thirsty for more episodes. Season five only had three, and that's just simply not enough. Netflix better serve us a sixth season as quickly as humanly (or like…creepy AI machine-ly) possible. Here's everything we know about it so far.
Has Netflix confirmed 'Black Mirror' season 6 yet?
Hate to be the bearer of bad news…but Netflix hasn't said anything about the future of Black Mirror just yet. But, rest assured. They keep all of the juicy Black Mirror secrets sealed tight until the last minute, so it probably doesn't mean we're not getting one. It just means they're staying low-key.
There might be something like 'Bandersnatch' in the works.
Bandersnatch, the interactive, infinitely long episode of Black Mirror was totally mind-blowing. It was also such a huge success that the show's creator, Charlie Brooker, says they'd consider trying something like it again…even though it was a brutal process.
"While we were making it, we kept saying, 'We'll never do this again.'" Charlie told The Hollywood Reporter. "By the end, I was saying 'Oh, I've got an idea.' It's definitely something I would do again, and I think there are lots of ways to tackle it.'"
Quick request: If they're going to do another interactive project…can they give us a little longer to make decisions? I was sweating trying to choose a cereal, I can't lie.
But there could also be a film-like project in the future.
Speaking of Bandersnatch, producer Annabel Jones says it's changed the way they approach the series…and might influence upcoming projects.
"I think Bandersnatch has proven [Black Mirror] can exist as a single film," says Annabel. "I like that idea, doing one. It's interesting for us, and hopefully for viewers, to find other ways…other forms of storytelling in which to dramatize things, if they're earned."
Okay, so…I think we can safely assume that any new Black Mirror projects will be weird as hell? Sounds about right.
So…when can we expect to see new 'Black Mirror' content?
Whenever the eff Netflix feels like it, that's when! LOL, I kid, I kid. But seriously, there really hasn't been any pattern to Black Mirror releases in the past. Maybe fall? Maybe winter? Who knows! You'd probably have better luck trying to guess when your ex is going to hit you with their next spontaneous "miss u" text.
Lee Daniels “Beyond Embarrassed” For Rushing To Jussie Smollett’s Defense.
When Jussie Smollett said he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack on January 29, Empire co-creator and executive producer Lee Daniels made an impassioned statement in a since-deleted video on Instagram, saying it was “just another f*cking day in America.”
Now that Smollett has been publicly accused of orchestrating the attack, Daniels told Vulture he regrets rushing to judgment.
“I’m beyond embarrassed,” he said. “I think that when it happened, I had a flash of me running from bullies. I had a flash of my whole life, of my childhood, my youth, getting beaten.”
In the interview published online Tuesday, the Oscar-nominated director said Smollett is like a son, and he still has “some doubt” that the actor would stage an attack.
“Of course, there’s some doubt,” Daniels stated. “I’m telling you that because I love him so much. That’s the torture that I’m in right now, because it’s literally if it were to happen to your son and your child, how would you feel? You would feel, ‘Please, God, please let there be that glimmer of hope that there is some truth in this story.’ That’s why it’s been so painful. It was a flood of pain.”
The day of the attack, Smollett told police he was walking down a Chicago street in the dark, when two unknown offenders approached him and began yelling racial and homophobic slurs. The actor said the suspects beat him, wrapped a rope around his neck and said “this is MAGA country.”
Vulture reminded Daniels that Chicago police and the city’s local media alleged Smollett hired two friends to attack him, in hopes of getting a salary increase on Empire, leaving little doubt that the incident was a “hoax.”
“We weren’t there. I can’t judge him,” Daniels responded. “That’s only for the f*cking lady or man with that black robe and God. I had to detach myself and stop calling him, because it was taking away the time I have for my kids, the time I have for my partner. It was affecting my spirit and other shows, everything.”
Cook County prosecutors charged Smollett with 16 felony counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly filing a false police report. The actor maintained his innocence and pleaded not guilty. In a surprise move on March 26, the state’s attorney’s office dropped the charges.
The city is now suing him in civil court to recover more than $130,000 it claims to have spent on police overtime hours investigating the case.
Asked if he followed the breathless coverage in the Chicago Tribune, Daniels said there was no time.
“I didn’t read any of it,” he said. “I was too busy putting out fires.”
Following the attack, Smollett was written out of the final episodes on Season 5 of Empire.
Reports emerged last week that the embattled actor’s character, Jamal Lyon, was being re-worked into scripts for the Fox series’ sixth and final season. However, Daniels said the reports were absolutely untrue.
“Jussie will NOT be returning to Empire,” he tweeted on June 4.
