South African gospel musician Neyi Zimu died at Busamed Modderfontein Hospital in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening after suffering a prolonged illness. He was 49.

Tributes have been pouring in after news of the ‘Jehova Re Tshepile Wena’ hitmaker’s death broke on Thursday morning. South African media reported that the Sebokeng-born musician died after losing his battle with skin cancer. He had been hospitalised for a number of weeks.

The Spirit of Praise member was one of the founders of gospel groups Joyous Celebration and Family Factory. His body of work encompasses multiple albums and platinum-selling hits that have earned him impressive accolades, such as a South African Music Award in 2012.

In 2001, he released his debut solo album Excited featuring Concorde Nkabinde and jazz duo Tsunami.

His works include a number of projects with prominent musicians such as Benjamin Dube, Sibongile Khumalo, Rebecca Malope and Vuyo Mokoena, among many others. Zimu was also the founder and pastor of the All Nations Revival Ministries in Midrand, Johannesburg.

South African political figures such as Economic Freedom Fighters leader Floyd Shivambu took to social media to express their condolences. “Rest In Peace Pastor Neyi Zimu!” he wrote.

Media personality and singer Refilwe Modiselle also shared her sentiments: “I'm heartbroken by Neyi Zimu's passing. That man blessed us musically and probably got me through some of the hardest times in my life when I listened to his songs. I was blessed enough to even meet him last year and just chat. Death be not proud. Condolences to his family.”

Dr Tumi wrote: “Nothing would have prepared me for that call… #RIPNeyiZimu. You represented the kingdom so well. Thank you for the contribution you have made and how you have touched our lives. Forever loved and your ministry will live on.

Zimu is survived by his wife Nelisiziwe Sibisi-Zimu and four children.

Published

on

YouTube has announced a selection of four fast-rising Nigerian artists who will receive career support. The musicians are Simi, Teni, Reekado Banks and Kizz Daniel. The four singers were announced at an event, titled A Celebration of Afrobeats, in Lagos last week.

This is one of the outcomes of the Google for Nigeria initiative, held in Lagos in July 2019, when YouTube made a commitment to support 10 Nigerian artists through Mr Eazi’s emPawa Africa accelerator programme.

Reekado Banks, Addy Awofisayo, Simi, Akah Nnani and Teni.

The four artists have been invited to conduct a series of workshops and content creation sessions where they will experiment with various YouTube formats. They will get marketing promotion and education on best practices for engaging and growing their international audiences.

“We are very excited to partner with these amazing artists to support their careers as their music travels across borders and they expand their audience globally,” YouTube's content partnership manager for sub-Saharan Africa, Addy Awofisayo, said at the A Celebration of Afrobeats event.

“YouTube has been a mainline for African artists to connect all over the world. From Yemi Alade’s ‘Johnny’ hitting over 100 million views to Davido’s ‘Fall’ at over 150 million views, there is no doubt that global audiences are dancing to an African beat”.

YouTube's announcement comes on the heels of the inclusion of Nigerian rapper and singer Rema on the streaming platform's Foundry development programme in late September.
